The men and women who sit in dark rooms tapping away at their computers at night developing websites all have one thing in common – they learn how to optimize their sites for the search engines. There is a certain science to the process but there is great room for anyone with an artistic flair too, and new ‘SEO revelations’ are frequently being made. Tips and tricks are shared on web boards and valuable information is even sold via e-books and site memberships.
SEO is a surprisingly enjoyable industry to become involved with. Constantly updated search engine algorithms make for frequent study and things seldom get boring.
It’s often described as a ‘waiting game’; it can take several months at a time to ever see any results from the changes you have made, thanks to the slow speed with which many engines index websites. However, there are some basics that can be used to help build the underlying strengths of your website.
Being good at search engine optimization requires that you pay close attention to several key things. You firstly need to ensure that your website is properly accessible by the various spiders (robotic pieces of code that work for the search engines and will visit your website) that exist. To be accessible you need to check various aspects of your website – having clean code that delivers your content properly, having unique content (not copied articles, for example), no broken links, forms that work properly, keeping your file sizes within suitable limits and using a server that has a solid uptime and is not too slow in delivering your website to the user. A good example of this can be seen at

If you have done any previous research into SEO then you have probably heard of 'meta' tags. These tags, along with others such as ‘title’ tags, help search engines discover what your website is generally about. The importance of these tags is debated a great deal, and some engines do not place much value on what you put in them. However, they are still often used to describe your website in the SERPs (search engine results pages) and as such will be read by potential visitors. When writing your title tags, try to include some secondary information. If your page is about ‘horses’ then also include something relevant to horses such as ‘Horses – Show Jumping, Racing and Breeds’. Meta tags for keywords can also help you structure your content around certain search phrases, which will help engines to list you accurately.
If it’s not too late, you also want to have a URL which is short and descriptive. While individual companies have had success with unique or original URLs, it is still best to give your visitor some indication of what to expect on your website, especially if you are promoting or selling something.
Finally, a word about your content – make the first sentence link to your main subject matter. Engines place more importance on the first sentence of a paragraph than the following sentences. Try to keep your text together in bulks and keep it relevant and unique. Any sniff of copied content and you will risk being blacklisted by some engines!
