Search engines are a powerful way to promote your website. They will bring you increasing amounts of warm ready to buy visitors. Search engine visitors are already interested in your product/service because they were searching for it when they found your site. Your potential buyer realizes their need and just needs persuasion from you that your product/service can fulfill their wants and needs. This means that they are coming to your site in a buying mood.
How do people search? When people do a search
They put in a keyword; briefly scan the title descriptions, and look for the most appropriate website. That is why it is important to put some thought into each of these Tags and your Domain name choice when you optimize your Website for the search engines.
Creating a site map:
In order to make it very easy for the search engine spiders to crawl your site, place links to all of your pages on your home page as well as every other page on your site Create a Site Map page and link to it directly from your home page. On your Site Map page place links to every page in your website. This guarantees that every page on your website can be reached with a maximum of two mouse clicks or "link follows" by the spiders.
Optimizing your site:
- Tags: Preparing your Meta Tags Search Engines require pieces of HTML code called Meta Tags. Some Search Engines rely heavily on Meta Tags others less but most take them into consideration. Meta Tags are pieces of HTML code that are not visible to your human visitors but very important to getting your Website indexed with the Search Engines There are 3 Meta Tags you will need to insert into your site's HTML: Title · Description · Keywords
- Your Title Tag: willbe used by the Search Engines to gather information about your Website topic. It will appear as a hyperlink on the Search Engine results page and will be how people will click thru to your site. Your title must be centered on your keyword/phrase that is in your page,( make the Search Engines happy.) Choose a title that reflects your business and includes 2 or 3 of your primary keywords. It must incite curiosity to entice people to visit your Website, (make humans happy.)
- Your Description Tag: Should be designed to give Search Engines instructions on what your page is about. It will appear on the Search Engine results page. It should be short and informative, no more than 13 words if possible. Put your most important information in the first few words.
- Your Keyword Tag: tells Search Engines what keywords they will index to from your site. Only include keywords related to your site content.
- Your Domain name: Try to use relevant keywords or a key phrase in your domain name:
- Optimizing your content. The 3 basic rules of winning content:
Keep your content simple and relevant. Keep on topic and
focused. Your visitors must not be disappointed when they find your site
through their search. The search engines will look favorably at your site if it
is relevant to the searches and easy to understand. Your 1-st paragraph is the most
important as this is often the only part scanned by the search engine sp iders.
This will be your 1-st introduction for your visitors and you want to
make a good impression. Happy visitors and satisfied robots make an all around
win, win situation.
Make your content informative. Visitors love this and robot
spiders expect it. Make sure your content flows well and always write with your
visitors in mind. Good content will encourage your visitors to buy from you and
help your search engine rank. Try to write original content. The best
informative content are info articles. Good quality
reviews are popular with visitors and will help you sell your products. A few
keywords and or key phrases in these and make your
robot visitors happy too.
Keyword rich not stuffed: Do not over use keywords and
phrases; the search engines will penalize you if you do this. Use key phrases
in your title, and description as well as your content. People search for
phrases as well as just words, use both in your content.
Do not get on the wrong side of Google .
This is one of the most powerful search engines and it is critical to your
business not to get penalized by this engine. With that being said
Do not:
Submit multiple URLs for the same site their database. Your main page index is the most acceptable.
Cloaking - Cloaking is having two separate pages, one optimized for the
search engines and a different one for the viewer. In other words the search engine sees one page but the user is redirected to a different page when the
link is clicked. This will be viewed as a blatent attempt to trick the spiders. Making doorway pages is also an example of cloaking.
Hidden text - placing hidden keywords on a page and making the font color the same as the background color (for example
white text on a white background). This makes the text invisible to the human eye but the search engine spiders can still see it. This is meant to give a
higher Page Rank and search engine listing for those keywords. Hidden text is often used on a doorway page. This will not only get you penalized but banned
from Google and other search engines.
Hidden links: are done the same way. The number of pages that link to one of your pages has a direct
effect on how high your page appears in the search results (and that page's PR). Hiding links will also result in a ban or penalty.
Link farms: A link farm is a page that lists links solely for the
purpose of achieving a high Google PR. Free-For-All links pages are often considered link farms by Google .
Be careful of who you link to! Realistically, you can't control who links to you, so incoming links will not hurt your site's ranking. However you do
control directly who you link to, so Google will ban or penalize your site for linking to a "bad neighborhood".
Selling PR - Blatantly advertising your high PR site to sell a link to
another site in order to boost that site's PR is another big mistake. Selling advertising
in the form of a link on your site is perfectly acceptable. Selling a link for the stated or implied purpose of increasing a site's PR is not.
Multiple identical sites (mirror sites- In order to increase PR, some webmasters will create and interlink multiple pages all
with identical or very similar content. This is not allowed.
Multiple domains - Creating multiple domains that redirect to one page
is not allowed. Also, creating multiple domains with the same or nearly the
same content and then interlinking them is a mistake If you have multiple sites place unique content on each site.
Excessive links - Google recommends having no more than 100 links on any given page. Having more than 100 links won't result
in a ban but it can result in a lower PR. 10 links to a page is an acceptable amount for your visitors and the spiders.
Take care when you optimize your site. Do it well and your
rank will rise try to trick the search engines and you will get penalized. When
you rely on search engines for traffic monitor them well with software like web
position gold. With careful preparation and monitoring you will get the best
results from this powerful tool.
