Newbie Tips on How to Create Higher Ranking Web Pages

Self SEO > Search Engine Optimization Articles

Some small business owners find themselves in an unusual position: they have a good website but they're the only ones who seem to know about it. Traffic is virtually nonexistent. They ask themselves, "What went wrong" as they try to make their site more attractive and eye-catching. Nothing seems to work, however.

The problem may not be your site's presentation but, rather, its ability to rank high in search engines. Potential consumers are looking but, if your site does not provide an easy way to find you, then all the looking in the virtual world won't do any good. It is up to you: you have to build a site that will find a top position in searches and here are just some ways to increase your chances.

1. Use Keywords

As obvious as it may seem, many small business owners fail to use proper keywords to represent their products. The more you provide a specific word, the higher you will be in searches for that word -- an engine will pick up your keywords and direct a customer to you.

Picking the right keywords is only part of the process. Once you have the right keywords, you should use these keywords around your web site. In your page title, in your headings, in your content, even in your images if you want. But don't over do it.

If you have the time, create different pages with different keywords.

Also, be sure to type your keywords in the opening paragraph. The introduction is what search engines use the most and you will heighten your chances.

2. Give Your Webpage Some Content

Your web pages will more likely be appreciated by search engines if you provide quality content. As opposed to a page with a list of affiliate links. Try adding an article with some of your keywords on most of the pages on your web site.

3. Remember To Submit Your Site

The easiest mistake you can make is assuming that a search engine will simply "pick up" on your page. You have to do a little work. By registering with the top search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc), you give yourself a better chance at receiving a high ranking. To do this, simply look for a link on whatever search engine you're on called, "Add Your URL." This will add you to the index. Take care, however, not to get involved with some of the "Free Pages" or lesser known engines. These promise great returns but, in fact, do very little. Many will only bring you spam. Keep to the well-known engines; their quality is guaranteed.

4. Increase Inbound Links

A better way to introduce yourself to the search engines is probably through another web site that the search engines have already formed a positive opinion on. Having your site linked from other high ranking sites is a great way to increase your own rankings. Some ways to get inbound links include submitting articles to article directories, posting comments on blogs and replying to posts on forums.

Though there's much more to search engine optimization, as a newbie, you should at least get yourself familiar with the above steps.
